Frank Kavanaugh

Frank J. “Doc” Kavanaugh was born on January 30, 1899, in County Cork, Ireland. Kavanaugh served in the British Army during World War I. After the war he attended St. Vincent College, in Dublin, where he was a track, hurling and soccer athlete.
Kavanaugh was hired by Cornell University, as their athletic trainer in 1937. He would serve at Cornell until his retirement in 1967. He spent much time and effort researching the prevention of injuries. Many of his modification to helmets and pads for football, hockey and lacrosse proved to be financially successful.
Kavanaugh would serve on the first Board of Directors of the NATA in 1950. He was the Board Chair during 1951-52. He would die, at age 86, on December 10, 1985.
