Jack McMasters |
John "Jack" McMasters, also known as "Scotty," was born in Scotland in April of 1855. Before coming to America, he helped coach Jim Robinson in walking races in England. By 1881, he had immigrated and was working at athletic clubs in Brooklyn. He would also train boxers and racing dogs. In 1886, he was hired by the Brooklyn baseball team (now the Dodgers), probably the second athletic trainer in professional baseball.
McMasters is the man kneeling over the athlete on the cover of Dropping the Bucket and Sponge.
Employment: Dodgers 1886-90, 1898; Princeton 1891-98; Harvard 1898-1906; Navy 1906-1915.
Death: Unknown, returned to Scotland upon retirement.
