James Lathrop

James Gray Lathrop was born on March 1, 1853, in Windham, Connecticut. Before becoming an athletic trainer Lathrop worked two years in a grocery store, two years as a stationary store clerk then eight years working as a bookkeeper for two insurance companies. What qualified him to be an athletic trainer was that he was a successful athlete. He will help found the first athletic club in New England in 1874.
Jim Lathrop went to Bowdoin in 1901. He will return to Harvard from 1905 to 1908 as track coach. Lathrop will spend several years out of athletics then coach track at Wisconsin in 1910. Lathrop will be back at Harvard in the summer of 1910. Lathrop’s final job will be at Bates College in 1911-13. He suffered a stroke and partially recovered but had to stop working in 1913. He will die at home in Connecticut on September 23, 1923.
